This news provoked unwelcome images of domesticity in Richards' urbane mind. With three kids she would have to give up her Manhattan walk-up, move to Staten Island, shop at Costco, and purchase large jars of mayonnaise. Moreover, the multiple pregnancy would force her to forego her spring lecture income. In view of these burdens, Richards asked her obstetrician if it was possible to "get rid of" one or two of the three fetuses.
